How to choose a rental truck insurance

Is it recommended to opt for an additional insurance for a rental car? If you have your own insurance, it may not be necessary. Keep reading...

1. know the limitations of your vehicle insurance. When you rent a car, coverage of most private insurance (coverage for your own car) is transferred to the rental vehicle while it is used by you. Call your insurance company to check it out.

If you allow a person not registered in your policy to drive, you run the risk of that damage while the person was driving are not covered. Ask your insurance company about this.

If your policy gives you a minimum coverage, perhaps you need to calculate the value of the loss or damage of a newer vehicle (rental vehicle) and decide if you need to supplement coverage. Personal vehicle policies that extend its coverage of clashes to the rental vehicle may provide coverage only for the value of your own vehicle. If the value of your own vehicle is less than that of the rental vehicle, you might have some responsibility for the damage.

2. find out if your credit card company offers some protection. Some credit card companies offer coverage for rental vehicles if you use your card to pay for the rent.

Asked about the repayment requirements. For example, perhaps not they reimburse you the money if you do not cancel the company's credit card within a certain period of time (for example, 45 days) after the incident.

In general, credit card insurance is to be effective, the rental car has that you have been paid in full by credit card, you should have rejected the partial exemption for damage by collision of the rental company and being the primary driver of the car. However, additional authorized drivers also come into coverage)

3. check if you have coverage under the following specific conditions:

On a trip for work. Some personal vehicle policies do not cover rentals to travel for work. The majority of companies does not cover any vehicle use involving commercial deliveries of food, materials, supplies, papers or people.

Long term rentals. Coverage may be limited. The majority of plans offered by credit card companies cover vehicles rented up to a month.

In a foreign country. Coverage may not apply.

Some vehicles for hire. Some vehicles for hire are not covered: exotic vehicles, mobile homes, pick-ups, etc.

4. If your insurance policy or your credit card company you not covered adequately, you may consider alternatives to the rental agency; any insurance it is better than nothing. You are covered against all and it is always better to pay a nominal amount per day to pay thousands of dollars per year for a plan of property damage, or get an assessment for damages for bodily injury. There are some plans that most States are required to provide by law:
  • Partial exemption for damage by collision (CDW for its acronym in English), also known as "optional vehicle protection or"Exemption for loss". The CWD means that if the car received damage for any reason, you can get away from the place without any liability, which apply even if your personal vehicle policy is transferred to the rented vehicle. This avoids you pay the deductible that you would normally pay under your policy, unless the same exemption has a deductible.
  • costs up to $19 per day.
  • transfers responsibility for damage by collision you car hire company.
  • cover "loss of use". Loss of use is a fee that the rental company charges if the vehicle receives damage and sent to repair. An amount is billed for loss of use damages and repairs the vehicle rental received, as well as an amount for each day that the vehicle can not be rented. This amount can grow! In general, personal vehicle policies do not cover the fee for loss of use.
  • You can override if driving illegally or on roads unpaved.
  • If you don't have insurance for damage by collision or comprehensive insurance, it is a good idea to buy an exemption. There are different levels, that your liability: any damage, damage exceeding $500, or $3000, etc.
Civil liability insurance
  • covers up to $1 million.
  • costs between $7 and $14 per day.
  • If you already have an insurance policy, you have it.
  • Most States dictate that rental companies cover a minimum liability without cost. Check the requirements in your State and decides whether it is enough for you.
Personal accident insurance
  • It covers medical and ambulance expenses for anyone in the vehicle.
  • It costs $1-5 per day
  • It is possible that you don't need it if you have a vehicle insurance policy, or if you and the others in the vehicle have proper health insurance.
Personal effects coverage
  • It covers the theft of objects in the vehicle.
  • It costs $ 1-4 per day.
  • an alternative is to buy a policy open under a home or tenant insurance so that the valuable objects are fully protected to wherever you go.
Tips

If you don't have a car, or if you rent cars frequently, ask your insurer about purchasing a policy driver who is not the owner of the vehicle. It can provide coverage for multiple rentals and may be an offer better than the exemption for damages that rental companies offer. Keep in mind that if you provoke damage to the rental vehicle, your vehicle insurance premium increases.

If you suffer an accident in a rental car and your vehicle insurance policy is transferred to the rental car (which happens with the majority of vehicle policies), the additional insurance you buy your rental agent is considered additional to your own vehicle insurance policy. This means that your policy will be the first to pay and that any damage which exceeds the limit of this will be assumed by the rental company, except for the rental vehicle collisions. For this type of damage, you'll pay a deductible for repairs of the rental car and your rental company will pay the rest. The only way to be exempted from this payment is if the other party is responsible or if you opted for the additional insurance, so that additional insurance covers damage to the rental vehicle, but not damage to property of others unless it is additional capacity.

When you rent a car overseas, perhaps prompted you demonstrate that you have coverage for rental vehicle or it forces you to pay a significant daily premium. Check this before you travel and considered to obtain additional coverage for your trip. (For example, AMEX offers this service for its cardholders an amount).

Warnings

Read the small print of your card agreement. It is most likely that your coverage is only secondary. This means that perhaps you could charge them to Master Card or AMEX only after pay from your own pocket for the damage. These companies are not in business for regular money, so it's likely not get anything from them. However, its advertising makes you feel safe... If your credit card covers some damage, the company will make a proportional calculation of damage together with the rental agency that is above and are additional to the limits of your policy, or say to cover any expenses that do not pay the other two entities.

A complement of civil liability insurance means that if you're responsible for the accident to hit another vehicle, the agency pays all damage of the affected Party (i.e., a who chocaste). THIS IS ADDITIONAL TO YOUR OWN POLICY VEHICLE LIABILITY!

Often, credit card coverage is only for the cardholder. You may not include your spouse (if it was who was driving).
